CHEM 1220 Materials

What materials do I need for this class?

The textbook we will be using for this class is “Chemistry The Central Science” 12th Edition by Brown, LeMay, Bursten, Murphy, and Woodward. All of my lecture notes, videos, and references will correspond to the sections of the 12th edition of the book. If you have an older edition of the textbook you are responsible to find the appropriate sections of the text that relate to what I am talking about in class.

In addition to the textbook you will need to purchase an access code for the Mastering Chemistry homework system. We will use this product extensively in class, as you will have assignments due before each lecture and all the quiz practice questions will be posted on Mastering.

If you took me for CHEM 1210 you already have all the materials you need for the lecture portion of the class (you still need to purchase the lab manual) and all you need to do is click here to enroll in this semester’s Mastering Chemistry course.

If you don’t have them, there are several ways you can go about purchasing these materials:

#1. Purchase an e-book with Mastering Chemistry. If you click on the following link you will be taken to the Mastering Chemistry web-site and Step 1 asks if you have an access code. Click No, I need to purchase an online code now and Step 2 will ask which text book you are using. Click the Brown/LeMay/Bursten/Murphy/Woodward Chemistry: The Central Science, 12e. For Step 3 click Yes, please include the eText with my Mastering Chemistry Subscription. This cost is $110.00 for the eBook and the Mastering Chemistry code. You can view the eBook on your laptop through Mastering Chemistry or if you have an iPad you can download Pearson’s free eText App to read the textbook on your iPad.

#2. Purchase the traditional textbook with Mastering Chemistry. You can purchase them brand new from the Barnes & Noble OSU bookstore and get the Mastering Chemistry code bundled with the textbook. If you click the following link: you will be taken to the Ohio State Barnes & Noble Official Campus Bookstore web-site. Here you will have two options: #1. Chemistry: The Central Science w/SG Master Chem, Periodic Table & 3D Glasses (new for $232.00) or #2. Chemistry: The Central Science w/ Access (new for $247.00). These are essentially both the same thing, but for the first option the chemistry department worked out a deal with the publishing company to package a few things together, which makes the cost of the book cheaper (all you really need is the book and the Mastering Code. The periodic table is also nice, but you can throw everything else away).

#3. Purchase a used version of the textbook (If you purchase the 11th Edition or before it is up to you to determine which sections of the 12th Edition map up to the sections of the 11th Edition). If you do this you will need to purchase a Mastering Chemistry access code, which will cost $60.50, so be sure that you are saving at least $60 if you decide to purchase a used version of the textbook to make it worthwhile. When you register for Mastering Chemistry, be sure to select the 12th Edition of the textbook regardless of what older book you are using as we will be using the 12th edition for the class.
