A Look Ahead: Discussion Questions
The question that you have just answered closely resembles a discussion question that you may have to answer later. Take time now to look ahead and attempt to answer this discussion question. Check that your answer is correct with your TA.
Error Analysis: Discuss why the literature value and experimental value for the Ksp of Ca(IO3)2 differ. This will lead to one of three different scenarios.
Scenario #1: The experimental value is larger than the literature value. If the Ksp is too large, what does that tell you about the experimentally determined concentrations of Ca2+ and (IO3)-? Where they too large or too small? You must write out the equilibrium expression and give a rational explanation of why the concentrations were incorrect in relation to the equilibrium expression. Other factors to be considered might be: Was excess precipitate in the saturated solution? How would this influence the endpoint? What was the temperature of the room? Was this the same temperature used in CRC?
